This year’s participants in the “I Can Too” (“Gam Ani Yachol”) national competition are an inspiration to us all.

The national competition in Israel is sponsored by the Education Ministry’s Science and Technology division, World ORT’s Kadima Mada program, MILBAT (a non-profit association that develops products for people with disabilities) and Rafael Advanced Weapons Systems.  This is its 13th annual competition, but the first with Kadima Mada’s partnership.  The “I Can Too” program aims to bring students together in search of new ways to integrate people with disabilities into everyday society.

For example, Orel Plomba – a visually impaired eighth grader from Kfar Saba – worked with her classmates to create a measuring cup with Braille on the outside.  Using touch, instead of sight, to measure allows young Orel to cook her favorite dishes on her own.

The winners of the competition were a group of students from Nazareth Illit who built a guitar for their classmate Dvir.  Dvir suffers from cerebral palsy, but can now make music with his family without having to hold the guitar.

Other competition entries included a device that allows people in wheelchairs to move through supermarkets freely and a special game that teaches various skills to children.
